Uric acid blood test: normal range explained

Also printed as: Serum Uric Acid, S. Uric Acid, Urate

Uric acid is a waste product made when the body breaks down purines, which come from your own cells and from some foods and drinks. The adult range commonly printed is 3.5–7.2 mg/dL, with lower figures for women than men, but the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What does uric acid measure?

A uric acid test measures the amount of uric acid in a sample of your blood. Uric acid is a normal waste product that forms when the body breaks down purines, substances found in your own cells, especially as they die, and in some foods and drinks. The kidneys remove most uric acid in urine, so the blood level reflects both how much your body makes and how well the kidneys clear it.

Why do doctors order the uric acid test?

Doctors order a blood uric acid test when someone has joint pain that might be gout, usually alongside a joint fluid test, and to follow uric acid levels during chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which release purines as cells break down. A 24-hour urine test, rather than the blood test, is used to find out whether uric acid is behind kidney stones. MedlinePlus says low blood levels are uncommon and usually not a problem.

What can change your uric acid result?

Uric acid moves with food, drink, medicines, exercise and fluid balance as well as with the kidneys.

  • Foods high in purines, such as red meat, organ meats and some seafood, raise uric acid, and so do fructose and alcohol of all types.
  • Medicines such as diuretics, aspirin in small amounts, niacin, ciclosporin and tacrolimus raise it, while some blood pressure, cholesterol and gout medicines lower it. Tell your doctor what you take.
  • Dehydration, fasting, a starvation diet and strenuous exercise all push the level up.
  • Reduced kidney function lets uric acid build up, which your doctor considers with your kidney values.
  • Some conditions, including an underactive thyroid, psoriasis, obesity and some blood disorders, raise it, and your doctor reads the result with them in mind.
  • MedlinePlus suggests not eating or drinking for four hours before the test unless told otherwise, while Testing.com says fasting is not required; follow your lab's instructions.

How do you read uric acid on your lab report?

Reports print uric acid in mg/dL, and many print separate ranges for men and women: MedlinePlus gives 3.0 to 7.1 mg/dL for women and 4.0 to 8.6 mg/dL for men, and says normal ranges vary slightly between labs. Check which row the lab printed for you.

A value a little above the range can follow a heavy meal, a night of drinking, hard exercise or a day without enough water, and Lab Tests Online UK notes that some people have a high level with no symptoms at all and that levels can vary from day to day. Your doctor reads the number with your joints, your kidney values and your history.

Amara reads uric acid with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports

Questions people ask about uric acid

What can change a uric acid result?

Many everyday things change a uric acid result: purine-rich foods such as red meat and organ meats, alcohol, fructose, fasting, dehydration and strenuous exercise all raise it, and medicines such as diuretics, aspirin in small amounts and niacin raise it too. Reduced kidney function also lets it build up. Your doctor reads the number with these in mind.

Do I need to fast before a uric acid test?

Fasting instructions for a uric acid test differ between labs. MedlinePlus says not to eat or drink for four hours before the test unless told otherwise, Lab Tests Online UK says some institutions recommend fasting, and Testing.com says fasting is not required. Long fasting itself raises uric acid, so follow the instructions your own lab gives you.

Why is the uric acid range different for men and women?

Uric acid ranges differ by sex on many reports: MedlinePlus prints 3.0 to 7.1 mg/dL for women and 4.0 to 8.6 mg/dL for men, and Lab Tests Online UK says the range seen in healthy people is wide. A combined adult range such as 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dL sits inside both. Read the row your report printed for you.

What does a high uric acid on my report mean?

A high flag means the value is above the range that lab printed. MedlinePlus lists diet, alcohol, dehydration, hard exercise, several medicines and reduced kidney function among the things that raise uric acid, and a high level can be present with no symptoms. Your doctor reads it with your joints, your kidney values and your history.
