Urea blood test: normal range explained

Also printed as: Blood Urea, Serum Urea, S. Urea

Urea is a waste product formed when the body breaks down protein and cleared from the blood by the kidneys. The adult range commonly printed is 17–43 mg/dL, while US-style reports print the same waste as BUN, for which MedlinePlus gives 6 to 20 mg/dL, and the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What does urea measure?

A urea test measures the amount of urea in your blood. Urea forms when the body breaks down protein, and the kidneys remove it in urine, so a rising level can mean the kidneys are clearing waste less well.

Lab Tests Online UK notes the test is also known as the BUN, or blood urea nitrogen, test, and MedlinePlus describes BUN as the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood. Amara adds, as plain chemistry rather than a quotation: because BUN counts the nitrogen in urea and a urea test counts the whole molecule, the two are printed on different scales, so never swap their ranges.

Why do doctors order the urea test?

Doctors order urea as part of a kidney function test, usually with creatinine, to judge how well the kidneys are clearing waste, to follow known kidney disease, and to monitor dialysis. MedlinePlus lists routine check-ups and screening of people at higher risk, such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a family history of kidney problems. Because urea also rises with dehydration and protein intake, it is read with creatinine rather than alone.

What can change your urea result?

Urea moves with your diet, your fluids and your age, not only with your kidneys.

  • A high-protein diet raises urea, and a very low-protein diet lowers it.
  • Dehydration, from too little fluid or from vomiting or diarrhoea, pushes urea up without the kidneys changing.
  • Urea rises slightly with age and is slightly higher in men than in women.
  • Pregnancy lowers urea, especially in the last few months.
  • Severe liver disease and malnutrition lower urea, because the liver makes less of it.
  • Heart failure, shock, bleeding in the gut, severe burns and a recent heart attack can raise it, which your doctor considers.
  • Some medicines that affect the kidneys can raise urea. Tell your doctor what you take.

How do you read urea on your lab report?

Reports print urea on one line and, on some, BUN on another. A urea value and a BUN value from the same blood are different numbers, as explained above; compare each with its own printed range and never with the other's.

A urea just above the range after a day of little fluid, or on a high-protein diet, can happen without any kidney change, and Lab Tests Online UK says a low urea is rarely a concern. Your doctor reads it with creatinine and eGFR from the same report, and with your history.

Amara reads urea with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports

Questions people ask about urea

Is blood urea the same as BUN?

Blood urea and BUN measure the same waste product. Lab Tests Online UK says the urea test is also known as the BUN test, and MedlinePlus explains that BUN measures urea nitrogen. Amara's own note: BUN counts the nitrogen in urea rather than the whole molecule, so the two sit on different scales; read each against its own printed range.

What does a high urea on a kidney function test mean?

A high flag means the urea sits above the range that lab printed. Lab Tests Online UK says many things besides the kidneys can raise it, including dehydration, a high-protein diet, heart failure, bleeding from the gut and some medicines, and that urea rises with age. Your doctor reads it with creatinine and eGFR and with your history.

Do I need to fast before a urea test?

Fasting is not needed for a urea test by itself: Lab Tests Online UK lists no preparation, and MedlinePlus says no special preparation is usually necessary for BUN. You may be asked to fast for several hours when other tests are run on the same sample. Drink normally beforehand, because dehydration raises urea.

Why is my urea low?

A low urea is uncommon and, Lab Tests Online UK says, not usually a cause for concern. It can follow a very low-protein diet, pregnancy, especially in the last few months, or severe liver disease, which makes less urea. MedlinePlus lists liver failure, malnutrition and over-hydration as causes of a low BUN. Your doctor considers these with your history.
