Creatinine blood test: normal range explained
Also printed as: Serum Creatinine, S. Creatinine, CREA
Creatinine is a waste product made when your muscles work, which your kidneys filter out of the blood, and a standard check of kidney function. The adult range commonly printed is 0.6–1.3 mg/dL, with lower values for women than men, but the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What is the normal range for creatinine?
| Printed for | Range |
|---|---|
| Adults | 0.6–1.3mg/dL |
| Men | 0.7–1.3mg/dL |
| Women | 0.5–0.95mg/dL |
Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Always use the range printed on your own report. Why ranges differ between labs

What does creatinine measure?
A creatinine test measures the level of creatinine in your blood. Creatinine is a normal waste product made when you use your muscles and some muscle tissue breaks down; it comes from creatine, which muscles use for energy. Healthy kidneys remove it from the blood into urine, so the blood level reflects how well the kidneys are filtering.

Why do doctors order the creatinine test?
Doctors order creatinine to check kidney health, often as part of a routine check-up or a kidney function test, and to follow people with known kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. On its own it is not the best measure: MedlinePlus says creatinine is usually fed into a formula with your age and sex to estimate eGFR, which is a more accurate picture. It is also read beside BUN or urea from the same sample.

What can change your creatinine result?
Creatinine depends on your muscle mass and what you did before the test, not only on your kidneys.
- Muscle mass matters most: men usually have higher levels than women, and athletes and people who do strength training sit at the higher end of the range.
- Eating meat shortly before the sample can raise creatinine temporarily; Lab Tests Online UK says by 10 to 30%, and suggests avoiding meat for 12 hours before the test.
- Creatine supplements and hard exercise in the day before the test can raise the level.
- Some medicines, such as cimetidine, trimethoprim and some HIV medicines, raise creatinine without changing kidney function. Tell your doctor what you take and do not stop a medicine on your own.
- Dehydration pushes the level up, while pregnancy, a vegetarian diet, low muscle mass and severe liver disease pull it down.
- Levels are lower in children and in older people with less muscle, which your doctor considers.

How do you read creatinine on your lab report?
Reports print creatinine in mg/dL, and many print separate ranges for men and women: MedlinePlus gives 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.5 to 0.95 for women, with the µmol/L equivalents of 62 to 115 and 44 to 84, and says normal ranges vary slightly between labs. Check which row applies to you before reading the flag.
An eGFR is usually printed on the same report, calculated from this creatinine with your age and sex. A single creatinine slightly above the range can come from meat, exercise, a supplement or a medicine, so your doctor reads it with your eGFR, your earlier reports and your history.
Amara reads creatinine with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports

Questions people ask about creatinine
What is the difference between creatinine and eGFR?
Creatinine is the measured waste product in your blood, while eGFR is a number calculated from that creatinine together with your age and sex to estimate how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. MedlinePlus says creatinine alone is not the best way to check the kidneys, and the National Kidney Foundation says the same.
Why is the creatinine range different for women and men?
The creatinine range differs by sex because creatinine comes from muscle, and women often have less muscle mass than men. MedlinePlus prints 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.5 to 0.95 mg/dL for women, and Lab Tests Online UK notes that levels are also lower in children and in older people with less muscle.
Can food or exercise change a creatinine result?
Food and exercise can both change a creatinine result. Lab Tests Online UK says eating meat can raise creatinine by 10 to 30%, and the National Kidney Foundation lists cooked meat, creatine supplements and recent high-intensity exercise among the things that push it up. Labs may ask you to avoid meat for 12 to 24 hours before the test.
Do I need to fast for a creatinine test?
Fasting is not needed for creatinine on its own, but MedlinePlus says you may be asked to fast for up to 12 hours when it is part of a wider metabolic panel, and to avoid meat for 24 hours before the test. The National Kidney Foundation also mentions skipping cooked meat the night before. Follow your lab's instructions.
