Total protein test: normal range explained

Also printed as: Protein Total, Serum Protein, T. Protein

Total protein measures the combined amount of albumin and globulins, the two main groups of proteins in your blood, which the liver and the immune system make. The adult range commonly printed on Indian reports is 6.0–8.3 g/dL, Testing.com's metabolic panel figure; MedlinePlus prints 6.5–8.1 g/dL, and the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What does total protein measure?

Total protein is the sum of two groups of proteins in your blood. Albumin, made by the liver, keeps fluid inside blood vessels and carries hormones, vitamins and medicines. Globulins help fight infection and move nutrients; some are made by the liver and others by the immune system.

Albumin makes up about 60% of total protein and globulins the remaining 40%, so a lab can calculate globulin by subtracting albumin from total protein. Many reports also print an A/G ratio, which compares the two.

Why do doctors order the total protein test?

Total protein is part of a comprehensive metabolic panel and of most liver function profiles, so doctors often see it at a routine check-up. They use it to help diagnose or monitor kidney disease, liver disease and nutrition problems, and to follow conditions that change protein levels.

Symptoms that can prompt the test include swelling in the feet, ankles, legs or belly, tiredness, unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, nausea, jaundice and blood in the urine.

What can change your total protein result?

Total protein mostly follows how much water is in your blood and how the liver and kidneys are working.

  • Dehydration concentrates the blood and raises total protein.
  • A tourniquet left on for a long time during the draw can raise the result.
  • Anabolic steroids, androgens, growth hormone, insulin and progesterone can raise total protein, and oestrogens can lower it. Do not stop a medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Liver disease, kidney disease and conditions that stop the gut absorbing protein, such as coeliac or Crohn's disease, can lower it.
  • Some infections, such as viral hepatitis, and some blood cancers such as multiple myeloma, can raise it.

How do you read total protein on your lab report?

Total protein usually opens the protein block of a liver function test, followed by albumin, globulin and the A/G ratio, printed in g/dL with the lab's range beside each line.

Globulin and the A/G ratio are calculated from total protein and albumin, so if one of those changes, the calculated rows change with it. Read each row against its own printed range, and take the report to your doctor with your earlier ones.

Amara reads total protein with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports

A sample Amara row for Total Protein: 8.5 g/dL on 12 Jan 2026 at Lab A (sample), then 7.4 g/dL on 30 Aug 2026 at Lab B (sample), each with its lab's printed range.

Questions people ask about total protein

What is the A/G ratio on a blood report?

A/G ratio compares the amount of albumin in your blood with the amount of globulin, and labs calculate it from total protein and albumin. MedlinePlus says a low ratio may be seen with autoimmune, liver or kidney disease, and a high one with some genetic disorders or leukaemia, so a doctor reads it with the other liver and kidney values.

Do I need to fast before a total protein test?

Fasting is not needed for total protein on its own; Lab Tests Online UK lists no preparation. MedlinePlus says that if the test is part of a larger panel, you may need to fast for several hours, so follow the instructions on your form, and tell your doctor about every medicine you take before the test.

What can a low total protein result mean on my report?

A low flag on total protein means the value sits below the range that lab printed. MedlinePlus lists liver disease, kidney disease, poor nutrition and conditions that stop the gut absorbing protein, such as coeliac or Crohn's disease, as reasons a doctor considers. Your doctor reads it with albumin, globulin and your history, and may order more specific tests.

Why is total protein part of a liver function test?

Total protein sits in a liver function test because the liver makes albumin and many of the globulins, so a fall in protein can reflect how well the liver is making them. Lab Tests Online UK notes it is mostly requested as part of a liver profile and rarely alone, and doctors read it with albumin and the liver enzymes.
