SGPT (ALT) blood test: normal range explained
Also printed as: ALT, SGPT, Alanine Aminotransferase
SGPT (ALT) is an enzyme found mainly in liver cells, and the blood test measures how much has leaked into your blood, which rises when those cells are damaged. The adult range commonly printed on Indian reports is 7–56 U/L, as Testing.com prints, but the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What is the normal range for SGPT (ALT)?
| Printed for | Range |
|---|---|
| Adults | 7–56U/L |
Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Always use the range printed on your own report. Why ranges differ between labs

What does SGPT (ALT) measure?
ALT stands for alanine transaminase, also called alanine aminotransferase. SGPT, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, is another name for the same enzyme, so SGPT and ALT on a report are one test. ALT is found mainly in the liver, and the blood level is normally low.
When liver cells are damaged they release ALT into the blood, so the level rises. Some liver diseases raise ALT before any symptoms appear, which is why it is used in routine screening.

Why do doctors order the SGPT (ALT) test?
Doctors order ALT as part of routine liver function tests, often within a comprehensive metabolic panel, and when symptoms suggest liver damage: nausea, poor appetite, tiredness, jaundice, belly swelling or pain, dark urine or itching.
It is also ordered for people at higher risk of liver damage, such as a family history of liver disease, alcohol use disorder, obesity, diabetes, medicines that can affect the liver or hepatitis exposure, and to follow a known liver condition or a medicine over time.

What can change your SGPT (ALT) result?
ALT does not say what is wrong with the liver, and several everyday things move it.
- Intense exercise in the day or two before the draw can raise ALT for a short time.
- Paracetamol (acetaminophen), statins and some other cholesterol or pain medicines can raise it, as can some supplements. Do not stop a medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
- Age, sex, body weight and the phase of the menstrual cycle all affect the level; ALT is typically higher in men.
- Heavy alcohol use or a recent illness can cause a temporary rise.
- Fasting is not required for ALT itself, but other tests on the same sample often need it.
- A low ALT is uncommon and may be linked with vitamin B6 deficiency or chronic kidney disease.
How do you read SGPT (ALT) on your lab report?
ALT is printed as SGPT, ALT, SGPT (ALT) or alanine aminotransferase on a liver function test, in U/L or IU/L, with the lab's range beside it, usually next to SGOT (AST). Testing.com prints 7–56 U/L for adults and says the normal range varies by lab, so the printed one applies.
A high ALT does not always mean a condition that needs treatment, and the level does not show how much damage there is. Your doctor reads it with AST, ALP, GGT and bilirubin, and compares it with your earlier reports.
Amara reads SGPT (ALT) with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports
A sample Amara row for SGPT (ALT): 61 U/L on 28 Jan 2026 at Lab A (sample), then 38 U/L on 16 Aug 2026 at Lab B (sample), each with its lab's printed range.

Questions people ask about SGPT (ALT)
What is the full form of SGPT?
SGPT stands for serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase. It is another name for the enzyme also called alanine transaminase or alanine aminotransferase, abbreviated ALT, which MedlinePlus lists alongside GPT as other names for the same test. Indian labs often print both, as SGPT (ALT), on the liver function panel beside SGOT (AST).
Is SGPT the same as ALT?
SGPT and ALT are the same test. Both names refer to alanine aminotransferase, an enzyme found mainly in liver cells; SGPT is simply another label. Whichever name your report prints, read the value against the range beside it, and compare it with the SGOT (AST) value on the same report.
What can a high SGPT (ALT) result mean on my report?
A high flag on SGPT (ALT) means the value sits above the range that lab printed. MedlinePlus lists hepatitis, infection, cirrhosis, other liver diseases, reduced blood flow to the liver, some medicines and poisons as reasons a doctor considers, and intense exercise or paracetamol can raise it for a short time. Your doctor reads it with AST, ALP and bilirubin.
Do I need to fast before an SGPT test?
Fasting is not needed for an SGPT (ALT) test on its own; Testing.com says fasting is not required. MedlinePlus notes that ALT is usually ordered with other blood tests that do need several hours of fasting, so follow the instructions on your form. Tell your doctor if you did a hard workout the day before.
