HDL cholesterol test: normal range explained
Also printed as: HDL Cholesterol, HDL-C, High Density Lipoprotein
HDL cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is the cholesterol carried by HDL particles, which move cholesterol back to the liver. The adult range commonly printed is >40 mg/dL, because the NHLBI counts below 40 as low, and MedlinePlus lists above 50 for women, but the range printed on your own report is the one that applies.

What is the normal range for HDL cholesterol?
| Printed for | Range |
|---|---|
| Adults | >40mg/dL |
| Women, MedlinePlus | >50mg/dL |
| Men, in mmol/L | >1.0mmol/L |
| Women, in mmol/L | >1.2mmol/L |
Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Always use the range printed on your own report. Why ranges differ between labs
| Label | Range |
|---|---|
| Low | <40 mg/dL |
| High | ≥60 mg/dL |
These labels are the source's own, not Amara's. Your doctor reads your result with your history and other tests.

What does HDL cholesterol measure?
An HDL test measures the cholesterol carried in high-density lipoprotein particles. MedlinePlus calls HDL the 'good' cholesterol because it carries cholesterol from other parts of the body back to the liver, which removes it. Unlike most values on a report, a higher HDL is read as better, which is why reports print it as a lower limit rather than an upper one.

Why do doctors order the HDL cholesterol test?
Doctors order HDL as part of a lipid profile to judge the risk of heart disease and stroke. In the NHLBI's ATP III guidelines an HDL below 40 mg/dL counts as a risk factor, while 60 or above counts against the other risk factors. MedlinePlus suggests the same schedule as for other cholesterol values: every five years for younger adults, and every one to two years for men aged 45 to 65 and women aged 55 to 65.

What can change your HDL cholesterol result?
HDL responds to habits, hormones and medicines, and it is read differently for men and women.
- MedlinePlus lists a higher healthy level for women, above 50 mg/dL, than for men, above 40, so sex changes how a value is read.
- Smoking and secondhand smoke lower HDL.
- Extra weight, especially around the waist, lowers HDL, and regular exercise raises it.
- Some medicines lower HDL, including beta blockers, anabolic steroids, progestins and benzodiazepines, while some statins raise it. Ask your doctor before changing anything.
- Diabetes, inflammation and some infections can lower HDL, which your doctor considers.
- Fasting is not needed to measure HDL accurately, Testing.com says, although your lab may still ask you to fast for the whole lipid profile.

How do you read HDL cholesterol on your lab report?
Reports print HDL in mg/dL as a lower limit, such as >40, because higher is better; UK-style reports in mmol/L follow the NHS's above 1.0 for men and above 1.2 for women. Some reports print the NHLBI's two labels instead: low below 40 and high 60 or above.
Read your value against the limit or legend beside it, and note that MedlinePlus and Testing.com give a higher cut-off for women than for men. A value under the printed limit is read with LDL, triglycerides and your history, not alone.
Amara reads HDL cholesterol with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports
A sample Amara row for HDL: 36 mg/dL on 3 Nov 2025 at Lab A (sample), then 44 mg/dL on 22 Jun 2026 at Lab B (sample), each with its lab's printed range.
Questions people ask about HDL cholesterol
Why is HDL printed as a lower limit?
HDL is printed as a lower limit, such as >40 mg/dL, because a higher HDL is read as better: MedlinePlus says HDL carries cholesterol back to the liver, and the NHLBI counts an HDL below 40 as a risk factor while 60 or above counts in your favour. So the lab flags values under the limit, not over it.
What is a good HDL level for women?
MedlinePlus lists above 50 mg/dL as a healthy HDL for women aged 20 or older, against above 40 for men, and the NHS puts the UK figure above 1.2 mmol/L for women. Testing.com adds that some organisations treat under 50 in females as low. Read your report's own limit, and ask which sex it was printed for.
Do I need to fast for an HDL test?
Fasting is not needed to measure HDL accurately, according to Testing.com, and the NHS says eating before the test makes little difference to HDL. Labs often ask for a 9 to 12 hour fast anyway because other values on the same sample change after food, so follow your lab's instructions and note on the report whether you fasted.
Can HDL be too high?
HDL of 60 mg/dL or above is labelled high by the NHLBI and counts as a protective factor, and MedlinePlus says higher numbers are better. Testing.com notes that an unusually high HDL can sometimes come from some medicines, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems or inherited conditions, which a doctor would consider with the rest of the profile.
