Ferritin blood test: normal range explained
Also printed as: Serum Ferritin, S. Ferritin, Ferritin Serum
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, so its level reflects how much iron your body holds in reserve. The adult range commonly printed on Indian reports is 13–150 ng/mL, which MedlinePlus prints for women, with 30–400 ng/mL for men; the range printed on your own report is the one that applies, and inflammation can raise the value.

What is the normal range for ferritin?
| Printed for | Range |
|---|---|
| Adults | 13–150ng/mL |
| Women, as MedlinePlus prints it | 13–150ng/mL |
| Men, as MedlinePlus prints it | 30–400ng/mL |
Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Always use the range printed on your own report. Why ranges differ between labs

What does ferritin measure?
A ferritin test measures the level of ferritin, a protein that binds iron and stores it, mostly in the liver, spleen and bone marrow. Testing.com says the result reflects iron in reserve rather than iron moving through the blood, and that it can show low iron stores before symptoms develop.
Ferritin is not only an iron marker. MedlinePlus and Testing.com both say it rises with inflammation, infection and liver disease, even when iron stores are normal, so a result in range does not always rule out low iron.

Why do doctors order the ferritin test?
Doctors order ferritin, often with other iron tests, to check whether the body is storing the right amount of iron. MedlinePlus says it can help diagnose or rule out iron deficiency anaemia and iron overload (haemochromatosis), and can be used in liver disease, restless legs syndrome and adult Still disease.
It is also used to screen people at higher risk of low iron before symptoms appear, such as those with heavy menstrual bleeding or pregnancy, and to follow treatment. NHS says a GP usually starts with a full blood count when iron deficiency anaemia is suspected.

What can change your ferritin result?
Ferritin can rise or fall for reasons other than the amount of iron in store.
- Inflammation from infection or surgery, autoimmune disorders, liver disease, cancer, obesity and alcohol use disorder can raise ferritin.
- An overactive thyroid and frequent red cell transfusions are listed causes of a high level.
- Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, a low-iron diet and bleeding in the stomach or bowel lower it over time.
- Poor absorption of iron from food, medicines or vitamins can lower it, and MedlinePlus says some medicines raise or lower ferritin.
- Biotin supplements can interfere with some assays; Testing.com says to stop them at least 72 hours before the draw, if your doctor agrees.
- NHS says large amounts of tea, coffee, milk and dairy, and wholegrain cereals high in phytic acid, make iron harder to absorb.

How do you read ferritin on your lab report?
Reports print Ferritin or S. Ferritin in ng/mL, or sometimes µg/L, which is the same number. Testing.com says ranges vary by lab, sex and age, so compare your value with the range on your own report; MedlinePlus prints 13–150 ng/mL for women and 30–400 ng/mL for men.
Ferritin is read with haemoglobin, serum iron and TIBC, and with your symptoms, because inflammation pushes it up while iron deficiency pulls it down. A low value with symptoms points your doctor towards low iron stores; a high value has several possible causes, of which iron overload is only one.
Amara reads ferritin with the range printed beside it on each report, flags a value outside that range, and shows what changed since your last report. Try it with two sample reports
A sample Amara row for Ferritin: 12.4 ng/mL on 30 Oct 2025 at Lab A (sample), then 24 ng/mL on 6 May 2026 at Lab B (sample), each with its lab's printed range.

Questions people ask about ferritin
What is the difference between ferritin and serum iron?
Ferritin measures iron in reserve, stored in the liver, spleen and bone marrow, while serum iron measures the iron travelling in the blood at the moment of the test. Testing.com says serum iron shows what is in transit and ferritin what is in store, and that ferritin can show low stores before symptoms develop.
Do I need to fast for a ferritin test?
Fasting instructions for ferritin differ: MedlinePlus says your provider may ask you to fast for 12 hours and have the test in the morning, while Testing.com says fasting is not required. Follow the instructions your own lab gives, and tell your doctor about supplements, including biotin, which can interfere with the assay.
Can ferritin be normal when iron is low?
Ferritin can read within range even when iron stores are low, because inflammation, infection and liver disease raise it. Testing.com says a normal result does not always rule out low iron, and MedlinePlus lists the same conditions as causes of a higher level. Doctors read it with CRP, haemoglobin and the other iron tests.
What does a low ferritin on my report mean?
Low ferritin means the value sits below the range your lab printed, and MedlinePlus says it may indicate iron deficiency anaemia or another low-iron condition. Heavy periods, pregnancy, a low-iron diet and bleeding in the gut are among the listed reasons. Your doctor reads it with haemoglobin and your history before deciding what to do.
